MELISSA FARLEY lives and works in Philadelphia, PA

Melissa Farley is a photographer. As an adopted child, she was raised with her adopted brothers Scott and Steven. Her early years and family life were emotionally complex and trying. As Farley struggled to find herself during her adolescence, she found solace in her photography. Photography has proved a means to sort out the issues of her past, to meet and challenge the events of the present, and to perhaps influence the unknown future.

Farley's unique sensitivity to light, emotion and body language allow her a singular perspective. The nuances of a persons facial expression, the way light falls on a piece of clothing or jewelry, and the choice of plants or furniture in a scene are all taken into account. She is exercising her control of the frame, yet does not attempt to heavy handedly present her message. The emotion is clear, but remains slightly open-ended. This allows her audience to project their own lives onto it, and to find a part of themselves in the photograph. This is exactly what Farley intends.

Melissa Farley will graduate from the Art Institute of Philadelphia this coming year, and plans to travel outside of Philadelphia, and perhaps move to the West Coast. She continues to develop both her technical photographic skill and her mental awareness of her surroundings and emotions.
