ANDY BRUNTEL
I feel as though I technically overcomplicate and conceptually over-think my video work, so this project seemed perfect for working against those mannerisms. I opted for simplicity, keeping the subjects and process personal and concise. I took all the photos within a mile radius of my house and focused on daily life, friends, my dog and the landscapes that I tend to routinely pass. I must admit, I’ve become quite accustomed to digital photography so the idea of shooting on film was a tad nerve racking. At some point in the course of taking the photos I did something horribly wrong and the advance wheel became stuck. I probably should have resigned and started a new roll of film but instead I tried to work through the full 36 exposures, forcing the wheel forward after each click.
Eventually the camera won, the little plastic wheel refusing to be bullied forward. Prior to processing I wasn’t sure what my contact sheet would look like. Fortunately enough it wasn’t completely blank.
It’s definitely not a flawless set of 36 images but a chaotic spattering of surprises and mistakes separated by empty voided frames.
